Mad

From one of America’s favorite and most successful playwrights comes a charming comedy of parenthood, the past, and the people who populate our lives.

Herb Tucker, a Hollywood scriptwriter in Los Angeles, has problems. He is struggling to come up with an idea for his next screenplay and his long term girlfriend, Steffy, is looking for an even longer term commitment. If that wasn’t bad enough, when Herb answers a knock at his West Hollywood door, he discovers his estranged teenage daughter, Libby, who’s traveled from Brooklyn with dreams of making it in the movies. Herb is confronted with his past and present as Libby struggles to reconnect with a father she barely knows. In the end, Libby and Herb both learn a lot about life, show business… and love.  Directed for the Gallery Theatre by Dee-Dee Oakey.

A musical by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones

Directed by Ralph Hewitt with musical director Scott Bradshaw.                                                                                                                                                                                                                            We close our 46th season with the world’s longest-running musical. Based on the Edmond Rostand’s play, The Romancers, The Fantasticks tells the story of two feuding fathers who pretend to be fighting in order to fool their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love. The fathers even go so far as to build a wall to separate the young lovers.  Then, to secure the deal, the fathers hire a troupe of traveling actors to stage a mock abduction in order to goad Matt to perform a heroic rescue and win Luisa's heart.  But the young lovers discover their plot, scorn each other, and go off on separate paths to explore the world.  Eventually, they return to each other, bruised but enlightened, with the realization that they have always been in love.  With a wonderful score and classic songs like "Try to Remember," it will be a musical experience that will be hard to forget.
